# Brands and competitors

> How Growth Mention finds the brands in AI answers, and how to mark your competitors and your own products.

You never have to list your competitors up front. Growth Mention records **every brand the answers name**, so the Competitors page is a list of who the AI assistants actually bring up — which is often not the list you'd have written.

Your job is to tell it who matters.

## Marking brands

Open **Competitors** and pick a relation from the menu in each brand's row:

| Relation | Use it for | What it changes |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Competitor** | Companies you compete with. | They're compared with you on the dashboard, and the [daily digest](/account/notifications-and-emails) tells you when one overtakes you. |
| **My Brand** | Your own brand, and any sub-brands or other products of yours. | Counted as yours in [share of voice](/metrics/share-of-voice). **Mark your own brand with it** — until you do, the dashboard's Share of Voice shows 0%. |
| **Ignored** | Brands that aren't relevant — platforms, integrations, unrelated companies. | Removed from every figure, as if the answers hadn't named it: it takes no share of voice, positions are counted without it, and an answer that names only ignored brands doesn't count towards visibility. It stays on the Competitors page so you can change it back. |
| **No relation** | Everything else. The default. | Nothing. |

Only organization admins can change relations. You can also add your own **tags** to brands — *"enterprise"*, *"direct rival"* — to group and filter them on the Competitors page.

## How your own brand is recognised

Your brand is the **brand name** set when the project was created. It's matched automatically in its common variants: *Growth Test*, *Growthtest* and *growth-test* are all the same brand.

If you're known by names that look different — an abbreviation, a former name, a product name people use for the company — add them as **aliases** under **Settings → Also known as**. From then on, answers that use them count as mentioning you.

<Tip>
  If your visibility looks lower than you expected, search [Responses](/guides/responses) for a variant of your name. An answer calling you by a name we don't know yet is the most common cause, and an alias fixes it.
</Tip>

## Brand names, kept consistent

The same company is often written several ways across answers. Names are normalised when they're recorded, so differences in capitals, spaces and hyphens don't split a brand in two: *Acme*, *ACME* and *A-cme* count as one brand. Names that differ by more than that — *Acme* and *Acme Inc.* — stay separate, because they're sometimes genuinely different companies.

## Domains

Each brand can have a website domain. It's detected automatically from the sources the answers cite, and you can set it yourself on the Competitors page when the match is wrong or missing — a brand whose site has a different name, like Confluence on atlassian.com, often needs it. The domain is also where the brand's logo comes from: without one, the app shows its first letter instead. Your own project domain is what [source score](/metrics/source-score) is measured against.
